The right rug size can make a room feel calm, finished and intentional. The wrong size can make the same room feel small or unplanned. This rug size guide covers the sizes that work best in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. It also shows when a custom rug is the better choice.
Start With the Room, Not the Rug
Measure the space first. Note where the furniture sits, how people walk through the room and how much floor you want to frame. A rug should relate to the furniture around it, so plan the layout before you pick a size. A quick trick is to mark the rug outline on the floor with tape so you can see the footprint in the real room.
Living Room Rug Sizes
In a living room the rug should sit under the main furniture group. There are three common layouts.
- All legs on. The rug is large enough that every sofa and chair leg rests on it. This feels generous and pulls the room together. An 8 by 10 foot or 9 by 12 foot rug suits most living rooms.
- Front legs on. Only the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. This works well in medium rooms and still connects the seating. An 8 by 10 foot rug is a safe start.
- Floating. The rug sits in the center under the coffee table with the furniture around it. This suits small rooms or reading corners. A 5 by 8 foot or 6 by 9 foot rug fits here.
Bedroom Rug Sizes
In a bedroom the rug should reach past the sides and foot of the bed so you step onto softness when you get up. For a queen bed an 8 by 10 foot rug works well. For a king bed choose a 9 by 12 foot rug. You can also place a runner on each side of the bed if you prefer a lighter look.
Dining Room Rug Sizes
A dining room rug should be large enough that the chairs stay on the rug when guests pull them out to sit. Measure the table, then add at least 24 inches on every side. For a table that seats six an 8 by 10 foot rug is usually right. For a table that seats eight choose a 9 by 12 foot rug.
When to Order a Custom Size
Standard sizes fit many rooms, yet plenty of spaces need something exact. Odd corners, wide hallways, round tables and open plan layouts all read better with a rug made to measure. A custom rug lets you set the length, width, shape and colorway so the piece fits the room and the design.
